    Heard, a retired university librarian, conceived the Handbook of the American Frontier as a four-volume set of regional books followed by a volume with a detailed index, chronology, and bibliography. The Handbook of North American Indians is a series of edited scholarly and reference volumes in Native American studies, published by the Smithsonian Institution beginning in Planning for the handbook series began in the late s and work was initiated following a special congressional appropriation in fiscal year To date, 15 volumes have been published.

    The word frontier has different meanings in different countries. In Europe it refers simply to a boundary between nations. In North America and in other parts of the world colonized by Europeans, however, frontier has taken on other meanings.
