What are the oldest possible texts I can read in English translation? I'd like to avoid reading through "new age" filters of ancient texts, but when I look up anything on Amazon, search results only yield recent books that are commentary on older texts rather than the original texts themselves. The Pyramid Texts (circa BC) are in many ways the most notable old written texts, not only because they are in a datable context (the Old Kingdom pyramids themselves), but because the texts are extensive. Unfortunately the Pyramid Texts are of a mystical character, not historical, but nevertheless the use of sophisticated words and terms.

Of all the ancient writings, most scholars agree that the Old Testament of the Bible is the oldest of religious books. It was first written at BC through BC and the words were given by God to its writers. In comparison, most others are relatively young. Koran or al-Qur'an (holy book of Islam) was written in AD. The Vedas are a large body of Hindu texts originating in ancient India, with its Samhita and Brahmanas complete before about BCE. Composed in Vedic Sanskrit hymns, the texts constitute the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. Hindus consider the Vedas to be apauruṣeya, which means "not of a man, superhuman" and "impersonal, authorless".

William Caxton's printing of Cicero, which is Canada's oldest printed book in English, is shown at the University of Toronto's Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library in Toronto on Ap Read this book on Questia. The Old English Beowulf holds a unique place as the oldest epic narrative in any modern European tongue. Of unknown authorship, and dating in all probability from the early eighth century, the poem gives brilliant presentment of the spirit and embodiment of the heroic tradition.
