What are the oldest possible texts I can read in English translation? I'd like to avoid reading through "new age" filters of ancient texts, but when I look up anything on Amazon, search results only yield recent books that are commentary on older texts rather than the original texts themselves. The Pyramid Texts (circa BC) are in many ways the most notable old written texts, not only because they are in a datable context (the Old Kingdom pyramids themselves), but because the texts are extensive. Unfortunately the Pyramid Texts are of a mystical character, not historical, but nevertheless the use of sophisticated words and terms.
Of all the ancient writings, most scholars agree that the Old Testament of the Bible is the oldest of religious books.
